What Your Food Eats Matters

We all know that what you eat makes a difference in how you feel, what you look like, how your body functions, your life expectance as well as a ton of other things (I really could go on and on).

When you consider that the food that we eat can either make you healthy or unhealthy, I think it’s no surprise that the health of our food matter too.

We typically don’t eat the meat of animals that have died of “natural causes”. We also typically don’t eat wilted, dead or damaged vegetables. When it’s an option, we pick the freshest of the all of our foods. So why is that? It’s not just because it will taste better (though fresh things usually do).

The health of our food matters to our health.

For that reason, many food suppliers and manufacturers have started to move away from GMO‘s and move toward offering more organic, grass fed and wild caught options for our food.

The more I experiment with subtle changes in my diet and analyze how they affect my ability to lose weight, the more I am sure that food matters way more than I ever thought possible.

I’ve been hearing a lot of “grass-fed” this and “grain-fed” that.. and for a while I thought it was complete crap. But I’m reconsidering after a little research. Studies suggest that grass finished (vs. grain finished) beef is better for you. It has more vitamins and minerals. The fat in the grass fed beef is even better for you. Corn and soy aren’t really good for you, or the animals we eat either.

Now the question is HOW MUCH better is grass-fed, organic, non-GMO and wild caught food? Well, there aren’t any studies I’m aware of that give a definite answer in regard to your overall health or life expectancy. But until science knows for sure, I’m going to buy the healthiest food I can find and afford.

Afford is the big word here, as we all know that the organic and healthy options are also usually the most expensive. I am certainly not wealthy either, but I think it’s worth the sacrifice (when its practical) to buy the more natural products.

That doesn’t mean I’m not going to Wendy’s for a Dave’s Double with cheese and no bun anymore. Sometimes life happens and you just gotta eat! That’s part of what I mean by practical.

Making small, wise choices when you can will make a difference. One big take away for me from my weight loss journey has been that I can make BIG changes in my life, if I just change a little bit at a time.

When I was a little kid I used to steal bags of chocolate chips from the pantry and hide them underneath my bed. So that when I needed a little hit I could just grab a handful of chocolate chips without anyone knowing. Talk about an addiction! And it started when I was so young.

Now I can confidently say that I don’t find candy nearly as tempting (or satisfying when I do eat it). I would never have expected this of myself, to be able to give up flour and sugar. But I started off slowly, and steadily made change after change.

The great news for all of you is that I’m not a special snow flake! If I can make this change, break the addiction to food and sugar, so can you. I believe in you. To quote Christopher Robin out of one of my daughter’s current favorite bedtime books: “You are braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”
